Script writing and video direction for newsreels

Challenge – To improve internal communication.

The company had embarked on many ground breaking environmental projects that they felt would be of interest to their employees and the old cascade method of imparting information was not suitable to deliver the important messages and generate a feeling of pride within their workforce.

Solution – A two-part approach: A DVD cascaded to employees to introduce the changes followed by 6 weekly newsreels to be played in the staff communal areas. Tina felt that it was worth introducing the new style of communication first and gathering feedback from staff to ensure that the more informal newsreel approach would be welcomed and enjoyed by viewers.

Stage one was a corporate drama in which the old cascade method of communication was juxtaposed with the newsreel style. The initial DVD utilised the style from the Tango ads of the 90’s with character commentary and rewind techniques. The feedback from staff was enormously positive and the series of newsreels were commissioned.

The style included on the spot reporting by employees and Tina worked with each of them to give them the skills to be at ease in front the camera. The newsreels covered subjects from the environment, to finance to HR and, as they developed, gave an opportunity to encourage presenters to contribute their own material and story ideas.

Claire Mascall, Director of Corporate Relations Anglian Water comments:

The deadline was extremely tight for our first project and Tina ensured that no corners were cut on the programme. Several of my team commented on her ability to talk to people of all levels and I was pleased that everyone who contributed looked natural on camera.

The solution has worked extremely well for us and I was particularly pleased with Tina’s approach to produce one programme and canvass the audience opinion before going ahead with a series of newsreels. At every stage I felt that Tina put our end goals first.
